This article is for artists and producers, to inform on how things really work in the music business and how to be successful.
Music business is a 2 part world. Music, and business. A lot of artists and producers might feel that there music is hotter than anything thats out and dont understand why there music doesnt take off like that. Its simple, you have music, but not business. There are many talented people out there that has the music down but doesnt know a thing about business! Lets address a few things here shall we?
ASKING FOR FREE BEATS. If you are a producer, you know about this and obviously if you are one of those artists, you also know. This hurts both. A lot of artists feel like there too good to pay a producer for his work and others feel that there are other producers giving them out free so why should I pay? Its simple. Value. The harder it is to obtain something, the more its worth. If a producer gives out everything free then his work is easy to get and becomes nothing special , therefore anything the artist does with that music is nothing special. The producer gets no where because the only people that uses his beats are artists that are looking for free beats. Nobody gains anything. On the other hand, when a producer sells leases or exclusives, that means the artist had to care enough to put money into his/her craft meaning they are more likely to do something good with it. The producer gets paid meaning they can afford bigger and better things and move up the ladder which also moves the artists that work with them up. The work has value. If Dr Dre or Kanye gave everyone free beats, it wouldnt be a big deal. But since they charge around $40,000 a pop, there work is highly valued. Not saying YOU should charge that much. They have a name and has earned to charge that much. Think if a new artist paid that to make a song with Kanye. That instantly puts them to that level. They have a song with Kanye. It could be there very first song but yet, instant recognition because they have achieved something that is hard to obtain. So the phrase send beats to is really reserved for artists who have already made it. Sending free beats to artist doesnt boost your status as a producer nor does it helps you become a better artists. Free beats are for you to practice with. Have fun with them, but when it serious, get a lease or exclusive. Back before internet, if you didnt have about $4,000 then you just wasnt getting a beat from a producer. Now, with internet, producers can get there material out there more and you can get a good lease for about $20 bucks! So help out yourself and stop being cheap! Producers, stop whoring out your music! If this is your craft, value what you do. Everyone isnt capable.
Promotions! How can I get my music out there? Tweeting everyone to go check out my music isnt very successful. Less that 1% of average people actually go and do it. Im going to tell you right now the best promotion is PAID promotion. Any business knows that they need to set aside money for promotion because it works. When a major artist has a new album, you see banners all over the web, posters everywhere, commercials and more. They dont get on twitter and say hey can you check out my new song? Now before you freak out and say Ugh i have to pay for that too?? Of course, music is an investment, but there are FREE things you can do. Yes I said FREE. Think of your music as a product. Where would it benefit? You dont want to advertise Burger King burgers in a group of vegetarians? Its stupid! You want to find the market for it. Do your research. If you make trap, dirty south music then find the people that are really listening to that type of music! So take your little twitter account and look up those type of major artists and see whose talking about it and tweet them! That boosts your less than 1% chance up to about 75%!!!! And its even better because you already know they are interested in that style of music. Bam. Also USE THE INTERNET! Post your work, your mixtapes, everything all over the web! This is also where getting legit producers come in handy. For example, song we promote, when artists submit to us the work theyve done with them, we give it to our djs, play them at events, and more because we want the music to be heard. Why? We promo it! It helps out both of us. Why are we able to do so? Because people visit our site. We can afford to push the music out there with PAID promotion! See how it works?
Quality!!! Cant express this enough. Mixing and mastering is a MUST. No music should ever be released if its not mixed and mastered. People already dont know who you are so dont give them a bad impression by getting them to listen to low quality stuff! If you are doing it yourself and are not quite there yet? THAT IS NO EXCUSE! No one is gonna say Oh he does it himself so Im going to continue to listen to it until he gets better They are going to move right along and listen to a artist of Quality. Your mixing and mastering must be ON POINT. A good mix engineer can make an OK song sound amazing. Its beyond worth it. Producers should mix there beats but shouldnt master them! Why? Mastering is the final phase. If your beat is just a beat, then obviously its not done because its missing the vocals! Why master the beat if the vocals havent been mixed in? So mix the beats and push them out! Once the artists gets them and lays the vocals, gets them mixed with your beat, THEN everything can be mastered together!
In summary, be smart. Invest in producers that are for growth. Lots of places sell beats and use the money strictly for there personal use. If you are going to invest in your music, be sure the producer is one to help both of you step forward. Dont give up, follow what we tell you and the success will come eventually. This website was started from the ground up. Investing #3000 here, #2000 there until we grew to what we are today. We are always open to talk and answer questions! Lets bring back music and bring things back to what they should be
